The American petroleum Institue (API) has developed internationally accepted standards for casings, tubings
and other oil country tubular goods. These stipulate dimensions and minimum properties like outside/inside diameters,
weight per unit length, type of coupling, and the grade of steel.
Non-API grades are also widely used in the industry for special applications, e.g. those requiring
extra-high strength or more resistance to corrosion.
